Went to Chops today for their $6 Kobe burger and fries. Normally it costs $15, so it seems like it could be a good deal, and one person thinks it was. My thoughts? Find out after the jump.
We got to Chops at around 1:30 or so, after walking around WashWest for a bit. The place was relatively empty, although it was after the lunch rush. We sat down and ordered some burgers. It appeared to be a popular item there, as most of the other tables had burgers in front of them as well.
The burger comes with romaine lettuce, tomato, caramelized onion, cheddar cheese, a side of russian dressing, and is accompanied by french fries. It’s served on a piece of soft baguette, which is also served as the bread before the meal.
How was it? It had its pros and cons. The pros included some delicious fries – seasoned well and just slightly crispy, albeit a touch too greasy. The homemade thousand island dressing wasn’t bad either. On the burger side, I was happy to see a small roll for once – it really took away from the usual ‘where’s the beef?’ feeling I get at many other places (*cough* 500). The burger was nice and thick, and came with chopped onions inside of it as well as some other seasonings – allowing it to gain some flavor.
There were several cons, however. First, we all agreed the beef was extremely salty – it really overpowered the dish, and made it so I didn’t even finish the beef patty (I finished everything else, though).
The other problem was that every burger was cooked between med. well and well, although we ordered 1 burger each med. rare, medium, and med. well. As you can see in the pic, they are thick burgers, so it’s either a cook who ignored our temps, or just doesn’t know how to properly cook a burger. It was disappointing, as any reasons to use the Kobe beef (I’m guessing it’s the American Kobe, which is cattle crossbred between Wagyu and Angus) got lost by overcooking them.
The verdict: B-, based on our experience today. Not a bad choice for lunch if you don’t want to spend a ton of money, but the sad burger would really make me reconsider going to Chops for a full priced lunch or dinner.
Has anybody had a different experience?
